Art entries due May 1

MANASSAS, Va. — Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative’s magazine, Cooperative Living, is accepting art entries from kindergarten through fifth-grade students for the magazine’s 16th annual Youth Art Contest. Art should reflect: “What I like to do in the summertime.” Entries are due May 1, 2018.

Students may use any medium to create their artwork, but it should be configured vertically (portrait-style) on an 8½-by-11-inch sheet of white paper. The child’s full name, grade, mailing address, and parent or guardian’s daytime phone number should be printed clearly on the back of each entry. Students do not need to live in a home that receives power from an electric co-op to participate, but they should live in Virginia.

Graphic designers and staff at the Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC), which publishes Cooperative Living, will select first-, second- and third-place winners in each grade. Each category’s first-place winners will receive $25 cash prizes. The “Best in Show” artist will win $100.

Cooperative Living will publish winning entries in the July 2018 issue. Electric-cooperative members, including NOVEC members, will receive the magazine.

“We provide the Youth Art Contest to encourage youthful creativity and give children a chance to show their art to the magazine’s 1.2 million readers,” says Bill Sherrod, Cooperative Living editor. “Our judges always have a difficult time selecting winners because of the creativity shown in the students’ art.”

Entries should be mailed unfolded to: Youth Art Contest, c/o Cooperative Living magazine, P.O. Box 2340, Glen Allen, VA 23058-2340. Original entries will not be returned.
