MANASSAS, Va. – Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative urges consumers to take advantage of Virginia’s sales tax holiday from Friday, Aug. 6, through Sunday, Aug. 8, to purchase ENERGY STAR® certified appliances and tools, as well as products used for hurricanes and other storms. Northern Virginians will save the commonwealth’s 6% sales tax.
ENERGY STAR Certified Products
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy’s ENERGY STAR symbol indicates a product is energy efficient. The product thereby saves money and helps protect the environment. To qualify for Virginia’s Sales Tax Holiday, products displaying the ENERGY STAR label must not exceed $2,500 per item and must be purchased for noncommercial home or personal use. Products include:
- Air conditioners
- Ceiling fans
- Dehumidifiers
- Clothes washers
- Dishwashers
- Lightbulbs
- Refrigerators

Eligible Hurricane and Emergency Preparedness Products
- Portable generators — $1,000 or less per item
- Gas-powered chainsaws — $350 or less per item
- Chainsaw accessories — $60 or less per item
- Other specified hurricane preparedness items — $60 or less per item
